Baseball: The Sport of Fathers and Children
We all remember those moments from childhood. The sun setting in the background and the dust from the field cooking and rising on a hot summer night. These were glorious times and there was no bigger stage for a child to be transformed into a hero day in and day out. But the reason those nights were so important was because your dad was there watching you. And if for a brief moment you could impress him, than there was no better feeling knowing that you were his equal.
Baseball and fathers go together like beer and crabs. The combination takes two wonderful things and turns it into a magical experience. So how could I deny my Father’s Day by not taking my children to the game? For my daughter, she has been to several games in the past. However, this father’s day would be the first game for my son. The bond of father and son as I mentioned above is so interwoven in the game of baseball. Coming home, grabbing a glove, and playing catch is a magical experience that has been played up by Hollywood. I’ve often joked with my wife that the scene from Field of Dreams where Kevin Costner plays catch with his dad is the reason for us having our son. Joking aside being able to spend time with my children and wife on Father’s Day at Oriole Park was magical.
I hope to have many more memories at the ballpark with the family. And I hope to play catch and watch both my son and daughter’s games during those summer nights.
