Episode 171: Airing of Grievances

–                          –                          –

 Leading Off

The Orioles are in first place in the AL East, and are 15 games above .500. It’s almost as if this is a good team – even with flaws. Maybe we should act like our team is good? And not freak out over every loss? Or something?

Remember to listen to Bird’s Eye View on Google Play Music!

The Drink of the Week has gone from drowning our sorrows to celebrating wins. If you’re “celebrating” along, tell us what you’re up to via Twitter (@birdseyeviewbal), or on Untapped (jakee4025 and magn8606).

This Medical Wing

What is it about Orioles’ relievers getting hurt while covering first base? Here’s a look at this week’s Medical Wing:

Airing of the Grievances

AP_Documents_DeclarationofIndependence

We took off last week to rest up, and celebrate the Independence Day holiday. In that spirit (the Spirit of ’76?), we have prepared the following list of grievances, so that we might make our own declaration. Here, in this list, we let certain members of the Birdland community know that they are on notice. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, we whine about our first place team.

Truth or Truth

Truth Just Ahead

With the All Star break upon us, we return to an old favorite, and ask ourselves a series of serious questions. And with all apologies to Steven Colbert, we want the truth… or we’ll settle for the truth.

Fantasy Boss

Fantasy Boss

This one was weird. We took an unexpected week off, and when we last left our “heroes,” Scott had selected the number of strikeouts. Jake went with Kevin Gausman, and Scott went with Chris Tillman.

Gausman won the first week 7-3. In the second week, Tilly took it 7-6. But in the end, when you consider the first week was the period of performance, and Gausman won overall, Scott graciously conceded defeat. That puts Jake up 5-4, and leaves us with an odd 3-game contest, after the All Star break. Scott went to the back of the baseball card and picked RBI as this week’s category. Jake took Chris Davis, and Scott went with Jonathan Schoop. Remember that our Wild Cards are still in place:

Next Oriole to hit a triple.

Scott: Schoop

Jake: Wieters (yes, really)

Next Oriole to hit a HR 450+ ft

Scott: Trumbo

Jake: Schoop

Next Oriole with an 8IP start

Scott: Gausman

Jake: Tillman

Next Oriole with  10+ Ks

Scott: Tillman

Jake: Wilson

Who will own it?

Blowing the Save

9511479204_bef874af1e_o

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
