Episode 313: Cedric the Entertainer

Leading Off

With nine games under our belt, we have been reminded of both how wonderful and how trying Orioles Baseball can be.

Maybe we shouldn’t have printed those playoff tickets after the season’s opening series. But it’s also possible that maybe things won’t always look so bleak.

This Week on the Twitters

Here’s what’s going on in the world of Orioles Baseball, in 280 characters, or fewer:

Around the Bases

First Base: The Elephant in the Room

We can’t have a podcast this week and not discuss the Orioles parting with PA Announcer Ryan Wagner. We don’t know (and are not entitled to know) the details, but what is certain is that an integral part of the game day experience at Camden Yards is now missing.

Thank for the good times, Ryan.

Second Base: Oh no! We suck again!

The series with New York and Boston (redux) were… not fun. The Orioles were firing on no cylinders. The relief pitching provided no relief, and the offense was just… offensive. We discuss which of those are most concerning.

Third Base: Cedric the Entertainer

Cedric Mullins is FUN TO WATCH. We’ve discussed ad nauseum how enjoyable it is to watch someone whose career was in danger of careening out of control come storming back into the majors. And we would stop talking about it, if he would stop putting up video game numbers.

Sure, it won’t last forever, but if he can be a fraction of the player he has been for the start of the 2021 campaign, Cedric Mullins will be entertaining us for some time to come.

Home Plate: Opening Week Experience

We went to Opening Day and Kids’ Opening Day on Sunday. Both games were losses at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, but both games were a reminder of exactly what we have been missing since March 2020.

Matt Kremnitzer: GIFs, Analysis, and Gallows Humor

You may have noticed that we’re big fans of Matt Kremnitzer – both the fun he brings on Twitter (@MattKremnitzer) and the thoughtful, reasoned analysis he brings to the game.

Matt joins us for a discussion of where the Orioles are in the rebuild, how to judge manager Brandon Hyde, and what in the ever living heck is going on with MASN.

You can find Matt on Twitter and his writing that exceeds 280 characters on PressBox .

Fantasy Boss

With 25 weeks or so to crown the 2021 champion, Fantasy Boss makes its triumphant (?) return to the show. With the score knotted up at 0-0, there are no ghost runners on second yet.

This week, the category is BB%

Scott’s pick is Trey Mancini.

Jake’s pick is Maikel Franco

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
