Episode 316: Hitless in Seattle

Leading Off

Fate smiled on us this week, as we moved our regular Monday night recording to Wednesday, and had the privilege of discussing the first Orioles’ no-hitter since 1969 (if you ignore the whole combined no-hitter from 1991).

John Means got it done. He meant business, and it meant the world to us.

This Week on the Twitters

Here’s what’s going on in the world of Orioles Baseball, in 280 characters, or fewer:

No Hit, Sherlock

John Means threw the Orioles’ 6th no-hitter in franchise history. And it was a lot of fun to watch. That is… if you were lucky enough to watch it. A get-away game on the west coast made this game awkward to watch for some working individuals, and for many of us, this was a SECRET NO HITTER.

Means had everything working – the fastball command, the changeup, and the beyond-the-grave help from his dad. Yeah, this game was fun.

Is John Means an ace? Well… sure? Right now, he quacks like an ace, so we’ll take it.

Around the Bases

FIRST BASE: Everything is… kind of fine.

It’s May 5th, and the Orioles have played 31 games. Through 19% of their schedule, the Birds are 15-16 – one game under .500 and 3.5 games out of first. I know that none of that matters. I know that this team is not going to win. But after about a month of baseball, everything is… kind of fine.

SECOND BASE: Talent in the Outfield

Don’t look now, but the Orioles’ outfield is fun. Like, super fun. Is it too early to refer to Mullins and Hays as “2131 Eutaw Street?” Of course it is. Will that stop us? Unlikely.

Don’t get us wrong, things won’t always be awesome. But right now… it’s pretty awesome.

THIRD BASE: The WAR rages on

The Orioles’ WAR leaders are a group of likely, and unlikely players. Sure, we’re still in small-sample-size territory, but with about 20% of the season under our belt, and with the likes of Freddy Galvis on pace to be a 4 WAR player… things are weird.

We discuss the “eye test” for Galvis’ defense, and heap praise on Austin Hays. Also, there’s that Means guy, but what has he done lately?

HOME PLATE: Minor Majors

Ubaldo Jimenez was recently in the news for the most delightful reason – the former MLB pitcher earned a degree in Business Administration. We here at Bird’s Eye View cannot be happier for him.

But it got us wondering about what fields of study former and current Orioles might consider once their illustrious baseball careers have ended.

Fantasy Boss

Jake is back up, at a score of 2-1. Scott selected the number of hits, and Jake’s pick (Cedric Muillins) outhit Scott’s pick (Austin Hays) by one – 7-6.

This week, the category is incredibly dumb: the Orioles MiLB affiliate with the most wins.

Scott’s pick is Bowie.

Jake’s pick is Aberdeen

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
