Episode 333: Got Back

Leading Off

This week’s episode features a visit from Matt Taylor, of the Roar From 34. Scott is on a well deserved vacation this week, so Matt has been gracious enough to chaperone Jake in his absence.

Our show ends with a plea for Bird’s Eye View listeners to consider contribute any amount they can to legitimate, vetted charities who will make a real impact for Ukrainians impacted by the war. If you are so inclined, an you are having difficulty finding organizations to support, here are some suggestions:

This Week on the Twitters

Around the Bases

First Base: Some things while we were gone…

The world does not wait for Bird’s Eye View. As such, there are a few things of note that happened since last we entered your earholes:

  • Paul McCartney
  • Baseball Returns
  • The Carlos Correa Saga

Second Base: Starting Rotation

So who, outside of John Means and Jordan Lyles, is actually going to start for this team? You might not like the answer, and that is mostly because we don’t like many of the available options.

Third Base: Any interest in free agents?

It is super frustrating to watch the Orioles build a sub-optimal roster, when we would very much like to see the Orioles win more ballgames. However, looking at the available arms to plug a “thin” starting rotation, we’re not sure that signing someone form this particular scrap heap. I hope we remember this line of thinking when we’re complaining about the Orioles’ lack of competitiveness in August.

Home Plate: O’s broadcasters won’t travel

The Orioles broadcasters (both radio and television) will not travel with the team this season – the only club in Major League Baseball to do so. Though COVID-19 precautions are the nominal explanation, one cannot help but wonder if this move is cheap to the extreme, a measure to protect the health of the national treasure that is Jim Palmer, or something else. Here’s to hoping the OriolesMASN and Hearst Radio folks are able to join us in thriving in a work environment in which no one can prove you’re wearing pants.

Thanks for All the Pies

Mark Trumbo is in Orioles camp as a guest instructor. It’s pretty clear that he views this as an opportunity to extend his career in baseball. What is less clear is why he is in Sarasota – why the Orioles? Does this team have the opportunity to “out-opportunity” in the coaching staff, as well?

One welcome development of the rebuild and the Elias regime is that analytics and data-driven decisions are an area of strength for the Orioles. Instead of this being one more area in which the Orioles could be an embarrassment the team is among the league’s leaders.

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
