Episode 342: Talk Birdie to Me

Leading Off

The Orioles flip the calendar to June, and lo and behold, there’s a lot to have Pride in, being an Orioles fan. We refrain from Jumping to Conclusions (Matt), and reflect on a surprisingly watchable month of baseball.

This Week on the Twitters

Around the Bases

We go Around the Bases to review this week in Orioles Baseball:

First Base: The Five Game Series

Jake was a BIG fan of the five-game series. Not just the Orioles’ performance against the Boston Red Sox, but moreso the concept of the five-game regular season series. Scott thinks he’s insane. Where do you fall on the five gamer?

Second Base: Are we worried about Adley?

Spoiler Alert: no.

Adley Rutschman is not having the dominating offensive performance that we expected… through his first ten MLB games. Ten. Games.

We encourage Orioles fans not to jump to conclusions while remind them that 1) there is more to the game than just the offensive side of the ball, and 2) don’t be dumb.

That, after all, is our job.

Third Base: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

The month of May represented the best of times and the worst of times for the Baltimore Orioles. But luckily, for every 10-run loss, there seemed to be a 10-0 victory. After recording a 14-16 record for the month, the O’s were a very watchable club – and though there were the worst of times, they were matched by the best of times. And for what we expected coming in… we’ll take it.

Home Plate: IS GRAYSON HURT?!

Bird’s Eye View responds in real time, as we try to make sense of the news that Grayson Rodriguez was removed from a game for health reasons. We review the best case, worst case, and most Orioles case scenarios.

How Close Are We?

Is it really going to happen in 2023? And what do we even mean by “contend?”

We run through our expectations of what the Orioles can achieve, and how close they are to contending. And I don’t want to alarm you, but the glass is a lot closer to being half-full than it is to being half-empty.

Which is weird, considering how many members of Orioles Twitter wonder if “anyone who participates in this podcast even like[s] the Orioles.”

Fantasy Boss

The universe has righted itself, as Jake won Fantasy Boss – bringing the contest to an early-season 1-1 tie.

This past week, Trey Mancini out xwOBA’d Adley Rutschman. So in response, Jake went as stupid as possible, and the new category is IP for a reliever.

Scott took Keegan Akin and Jake went with Joey Krehbiel.

Who will own it?

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
