Leading Off
Illness has been a challenge yet again, but now that the boy are back in shorts in Sarasota, we have the ability to focus more on their health than on our own.
Orioles Baseball is back on center stage, now that we’re done arguing about the Tubi commercial, and the Ravens have their new offensive coordinator.

Around the Bases
First Base: MASNholes
Good luck finding an Orioles Spring Training game on television this year. MASN is going to televise four whole games. We have no idea how they are going to find the time, without cutting into their key demographic – people who love poker and rodeo.
Jake has a Modest Proposal that would allow Major League Baseball the opportunity to fix the mess they made.
Second Base: Offseason Feels
With Spring Training upon us, the offseason is over. So we talk about how we felt about it. We briefly discuss the Good, Bad, and Ugly of the offseason, and we review PECOTA’s projections, and Birdland’s response.
Third Base: Boys in Shorts!
Spring Training is back! Every major (and minor) publication has put out it’s “5 Storylines to Watch in Spring Training in 2023.” We avoid that trope, but identify things that we’re interested in seeing this Spring.
Home Plate: A Whole New Ballgame
Major League Baseball is going to look a lot different than it did just last year. New rules that will take effect include:
- The shift is banned
- The bases will be bigger
- Balks will be more strongly enforced
- The pitch clock will be introduced in the majors
- Position player pitching is being further restricted
- The extra inning Ghost Runner rules have been made permanent
We are not generally people who oppose change for the sake of opposing change. But in this instance, we are certainly old men shaking their fists and yelling at clouds. We hope that many of these changes are quickly forgotten, because they turn out to be less consequential than we expected.
Blowing the Save
Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
