Episode 372: Taters Till Tomorrow

Leading Off

We’re back from our self-induced indefinite suspension, and the Orioles have given us a lot to discuss. Greatness on the field and pettiness off it. Buckle up for another #DongsAfterDark episode.

This Week on the Twitters

Dongs After Dark

#DongsAfterDark is back – not just on the podcast, but in west coast Orioles games. We love west coast baseball, we love Orioles home runs, and we love the absurdity that is… Dongs After Dark.

We worked hard to name this episode, by the way. And here are some of the choices we left on the cutting room floor:

  • Dongs After Dark 2: Nocturnal All-Stars
  • Dongs After Dark 2: Legends in the Moonlight
  • Dongs After Dark II: Grand Slam Glory
  • Dongs After Dark 4: Nighttime Heroes

Around the Bases

First Base: KB vs PAA

We’re late to the game, and we’re not sure that we can add anything new to the John-Angelos-is-a-small-and-pathetic-loser discussion. But we definitely wanted to weigh in on the fact that John Angelos is a small and pathetic loser.

Our love of Kevin Brown is well documented, but we can never say enough about how sad it is that our winning ballclub is nationally known as the team whose management can’t get out of its own way.

Second Base: Pitching

There’s a six man rotation, some effective relievers, and some other guys who are throwing the ball. Some are exciting, some are concerning, and some may be on the horizon to help the Orioles push into the playoffs.

Third Base: Cedric

Cedric Mullins had himself a game, and we had to talk about it. An amazing catch, a near game-defining home run, followed by an actual game-defining home run. Wow, wow, wow.

Home Plate: The important question

Jake is living vicariously through Scott buying a new baseball cap. Yep. That’s a real thing that is happening. We are so, so cool.

Which got us to thinking: what Participation Trophies should we hand out for the 2023 Orioles? Yes, we realize that we recently handed out some faux hardware in the 11th Annual BEVy awards, but come on – when it comes to participation trophies, we as Millennials are uniquely qualified to hand them out.

Fantasy Boss

Don’t call it a comeback! Because, well, its not. But Jake picked up a win since Episode 371, correctly guessing that Jack Flaherty would pitch exactly six innings in his Orioles debut. The score is now 8-3 in Scott’s favor.

Additionally, one of our Wild Cards was knocked out, (Fuji got the first non-Bautista/Cano save), so we have replaced it (see below).

This week’s category is dongs (regardless of time). Jake took Ryan Mountcastle and Scott selected Gunnar Henderson.

Next Oriole to hit a 450+ foot HR

  • Scott selected Gunnar Henderson
  • Jake took Austin Hays

Next Oriole (not named Ryan McKenna) to serve as a position-player-pitcher

  • Scott selected Ramon Urias
  • Jake went with James McCann

Who will own it?

Who had a great week? Who had a tough week? Who made us ashamed to be Orioles fans? Find out in this week’s GB&U. The guys run through their Good, Bad, and Ugly for the week.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
