The Draft

There was a time that Orioles fans could be excused for being very distracted by the NFL schedule. As the NFL learned how to make its year-round football activities more and more of a spectacle, the Orioles became less and less compelling to watch.

During these, the Darkest of Ages, Orioles fans would be glued to OTAs and preseason games instead of actual baseball games, starting in July. Baseball games would also take a backseat to the NFL Draft – an event that included weeks of prognostication, anticipation, and gallons of spilled ink.

With that in mind, we present the 2024 Birdland Draft.

Around the Bases

In honor of the Orioles hitting home runs like they’re going out of style, we forego the rest of the bases, and we hit home plate each time…

First Base:  Athletics, Yankees to round out April

The Orioles are currently 16-8. There have been some bad losses, but the returns are pretty good so far. The Birds get the Athletics (8-16) at home followed by a big series with the Yankees (17-8). Yankees are at Brewers.

How will we feel about April if…

Second Base: Walkabout

The Orioles’ offense is firing on all cylinders, but they aren’t walking very much. Is this an honest-to-Bird problem, or is this just a content creator in search of content?

BTW, if it’s the latter, we totally get that, as people who work to create Orioles content on a weekly basis.

Third Base: Promotions, Part Deux

The O’s have released the second half of their promotional schedule, and there are some exciting things, here. We review the items we’re excited about, and why.

Home Plate: Awards Season

There are a number of Orioles players who are presumptive favorites to win end-of-season awards. Who do we feel most/least confident about?

Fantasy Boss

Scott takes his first victory of the year, correctly predicting that Gunnar Henderson would out-XBH Jake’s pick, Ryan O’Hearn.

The score is now 2-1, and Jake is on the clock for selecting this week’s category.

This week’s category is (worst) K% (for a “regular” getting 10 or more plate appearances).

Scott took Ryan Mountcastle

Jake went with Cedric Mullins

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
