Episode 394: Yankee Shanky

Leading Off

The Orioles went well beyond a little Yankee Spanky this week, and brought out the shanks. After taking a tough series from the Phils, the Orioles followed up by taking a series from the Yankees – in the Bronx – to draw within a half game of first place. Not enough drama for you? Well, some of the Yankees had big feelings, too.

This Week on the Socials

Around the Bases

First Base: The Yankees are insufferable

A team of luxury and privilege whined about being pitched to like everyone else in the league. And it was a really bad look for them. In a three game series, the Orioles won on the field and off the field.

Second Base: Thriving, not surviving

The Orioles had a really difficult June ahead of them. With few off days on the schedule, and some really good teams, things could have gotten ugly. And they were ugly: for everyone else. The Orioles’ worst outcome was a split of a four game series with Toronto. The Orioles had to take on the Phillies and the Yankees in back-to-back series.

And leaving that stretch at 4-2 is not simply surviving those games. The Orioles are thriving.

Third Base: All Star Voting

The Orioles have a number of players at the top (or near) in All Star voting. And unlike the Royals’ bot-fest in 2015, this comes from a motivated fan base. The O’s have the chance to send 4-5 representatives to Arlington.

Vote, vote, and vote some more. And when you’re finished with that? Vote.

Home Plate: The Phillies series

The Orioles had three consecutive sell-outs at Camden Yards, as two excellent teams right down the road from one another squared off in one of MLB’s most incredible parks. The baseball was excellent, but the vibes were immaculate. The games had a playoff atmosphere, but a repeat in October would be incredible (if not poetic, for obvious reasons).

Fantasy Boss

Jake ekes out another win! The score tightens to 6-5, as Jake correctly guessed that Jordan Westburg would out-hit Jorge Mateo.

This week, it’s dongs. Dongs, dongs, dongs.

Jake took Anthony Santander. Scott went with Gunnar Henderson.

Blowing the Save

Most podcasts try to end on a high note – the perfect coda to a quality program. That’s just not our style. Each week, we’ll end on a weak note, blowing the save with an item that didn’t quite fit into the episode, or something they simply need to get off their chests. It’s our version of taking the ball and pulling a Kevin Gregg.
