HULK SMASH PRICES!
Back in Episode 41, we praised the Orioles for actually trying to make more affordable tickets available, as an attempt to further re-energize the fan base. They clearly listened to the podcast, and cooked up some new ideas, because they’re back at it.
The Orioles are running a promotion in conjunction with the All Star Game Home Run Derby that may save you some money. You know: dough, cash, greenbacks. Green like… The Hulk.
The idea is that prices for field-level seats to select games will be reduced by a dollar for every home run Davis hits (seats usually run $30-60). I think this is a great promotion, as it works to boost attendance against some “super non-prime” opponents (Astros and Mariners), and might make the up-close, field level experience a reality for fans who are not generally willing to shell out for those tickets.
The Orioles aren’t crazy. They have watched Davis’ power all season. They’ve capped your potential savings at $25, but I won’t beat them up over that. If Davis goes HR crazy, you’re looking at the possibility of buying $30 seats for $5.
This is a win, all around. MLB might draw some additional eyes to the Home Run Derby. The Orioles may get a few more (and more expensive) asses in the seats. And some fans may get a really good deal to see… well, they’ll get a close look at a good product on the field. After fourteen terrible years, that still feels weird to say. Good weird.
Tune in tonight, to cheer on Crush Davis. Just do yourself a favor: watch it on mute.
