Jump To Conclusions Matt
I’ll admit it. I made an assumption.
If you listened to last night’s Post Game Live on Channel BSR, you were treated to Zach Wilt and Josh Sroka trying to have a well measured conversation about the possibilities facing us with Matt Wieters, while I – literally – stuck my fingers in my ears and said “la, la, la, la.”
I didn’t want to think reasonably. As a life-long Orioles fan who experienced 14 years of “The Dark Period,” I’m accustomed to thinking that if there is one outcome that could make me incredibly miserable, it is more than likely going to happen.
So yes, I jumped to conclusions, Matt.
I was sure that Matt Wieters’ visit with Dr. James Andrews was going to show that he needed surgery. And that this surgery would bring his season to an end, and drag the O’s down with him. I was sure of it. Why wouldn’t it?
Instead, it looks like Wieters needs some time to rest his sore forearm. There is no structural damage that would indicate a torn ligament. He is not a surgical candidate.
Wieters will probably continue to DH and take extra days off until he is “back and better than ever.” Maybe I should learn something from this experience, and avoid some other assumptions. I suppose I should be leery in assuming that this little bump in the road will be over quickly, and that he’s on his way to that offensive season we’ve always dreamed about… or that he will continue to rake against righties (he’s currently #6 on the list of MLB league leaders in AVG).
Maybe I should just slow my roll, and not get too high or too low. But where would the fun in that be?
