O’s Auction #42 Unis for Charity
The Orioles are auctioning off the game-worn #42 commemorative jerseys they wore on Jackie Robinson Day. The auction will benefit the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. These are all good things. I think the jerseys are a nice touch, and any time the Orioles and MLB raise money, you have to applaud them.
But the thought of auctioning off these jerseys amuses me. Sure, it would be neat to have an authentic game-worn jersey signed by stars like Adam Jones. On the other hand, the team is trying to unload jerseys for the likes of Einar Diaz, Who the Hell is Steve Pearce, and Chris Dickerson. The minimum bid is $150, which ensures that two very good charities are taken care of, and saves certain players the indignity of seeing what their jersey would go for on the open market. It will be interesting to see what they do with the unsold inventory.
It’s definitely worth checking out over at the Orioles website (click Bid Now to view the jerseys).
