Throwback Thursday: Chris Hoiles Ultimate Grand Slam

How many people claim to have been there for 2131? Or to have been there for the last out of ALDS Game 2  in 2012. Here’s another one: of the 47,529 on hand to watch the Orioles play the Mariners on May 17, 1996, how many stayed 4 hours later to watch a dramatic come back?

The moment was another example of Orioles Magic: the Chris Hoiles Ultimate Grand Slam. What, you might ask, is an “utlimate grand slam?” It’s a grand slam that results in a one-run walk-off win. Your  team is down by three runs, the bases are loaded, and you put one in the seats.

This instance was even more dramatic. Down by three runs, the Orioles got two outs in the bottom of the ninth before loading the bases (including working two walks). Hoiles worked the count full, and made the most of the “payoff pitch.”

Hoiles hit 151 career home runs 8 of them were grand slams. This one, was the clear career highlight.
