Throwback Thursday: Pie’s Cycle
There was a time when it seemed that Orioles President of Baseball Operations, Andy MacPhail, dealt exclusively with the Chicago Cubs. If there was a deal to be made, it was with Chicago. If there was a low profile free agent to acquire, he had former ties to the Cubs organization. It should be no surprise, then, that Pie was acquired in a trade for left-handed pitcher Garret Olson and minor league pitcher Henry Williamson.
Pie was… “frustrating.” MacPhail and company tried to sell us on Felix Pie as a five-tool player. Even worse, was the fact that he would show it every now and again, but he never found the consistency required to keep him in the majors.
But one night, at least, he lived up to the expectations. It was August 14, 2009, and the Orioles were 24.5 games out of first. O’s fans had literally nothing to cheer for… except tremendous individual performances. Like that time that Felix Pie hit for the cycle.
Yes, that Felix Pie.
