With Apologies, Back to Talking Baseball

This week has been absolutely insane. So many people are hurting. From those feeling the cruel weight of injustice, to those horrified by senseless violence, to those charged with protecting a city gone mad.

As Baltimore burned, the silliness of our devotion to the game of baseball came into sharper focus. We hang on every pitch of a game in which grown men play a kids’ game. To paraphrase: ain’t nobody got time for that.

Bird’s Eye View is a silly podcast about a silly game. Scott and I have strong opinions about what’s going on, but this isn’t the right venue for that. If you’re reading this blog, it’s because you’re interested in the Baltimore Orioles, not because of what I think about current events. It would have been inappropriate for us to engage in social media on a more serious note.

But it was also inappropriate to continue talking baseball, as if it mattered. Because it didn’t. Not even a little.

I don’t know when the right time is to reintroduce a sense of “normal.” But the Orioles are playing a game today, so with all apologies to those of us who aren’t ready, we’re going to talk baseball. Selfishly, I am looking forward to being able to sink myself into three hours of escapism at night, and the routine associated with this silly podcast about a silly game.

Baltimore has a long road in front of it. There is a lot of serious thought and action to take place. Who knows, maybe baseball can serve, as it sometimes does, as a pillar of civic identity and pride. Maybe in some small way this silly game can contribute to making a great city great again. One can always hope.

And if that is the case, we’ll be sure to share with you our own lack of insight and baseless opinion.

So with all apologies, on to talking baseball…
